A GAZE #2 (Bouwjaar '84 Theatre, Tilburg)

This is a short promo video of the duet "A gaze" recorded on tour in the Netherlands.

From a deep sense of touch with ours eyes wide open, we gaze into a moment of undeniable truth; and from the deep sense of physical touch. ‘a gaze’ is a tangent from Brendan and Tony’s on-going morphing series of Dionysus’s Molecule.

A Gaze is a foreground to Tony and Brendan questioning issues of masculinity, the deep bond between them that developed through the theme of their fathers’ deaths, and their creative practice together as dancers with a 20-year age difference.

DYING BEFORE DYING

To be perfect, it needs to abandon all known positive and negative feeling, to reject being human and accept an unrecognised and unknown consciousness which is different from the ego. This is called “Fenafillah”, “Dying before Dying.

After touring in the Netherlands  of  Brendan and Tony"s work "A Gaze". They collaborated with friends and well known Dutch artist Inez Wolters and Belgium Musician Wouter De Belder on this theme  for the malacca Arts and performance festival.

STRIFE OF THE LIGHT BEARER

A Butoh anaesthetic by Tony Yap with Brendan O’Connor and Jonathan Rainin.

Lucifer ('light-bearer') and his "portentous shades," elephantine creatures, fall through the stormy skies of some "foreign, un-terrestrial sphere" (Edward Young's lines).

In William Blake's myth, Lucifer represents the first rejection of spirituality; his flaw is pride. He is a fallen aspect of God within man,  where he must battle within himself -- selfishness and perverseness.
